This year has been full of fairly shocking celebrity divorces, big profile ones that have hit fans hard. In part, it affects us because celebrity couples are often viewed as representatives of our goals and ideals. However, at the end of the day, we all know they’re human and have the same relationship struggles everybody does. We just don’t get to see behind the scenes. More than that, they may even have it worse that us everyday folk.

Imagine you’re living your own celebrity elite life. Both you and your partner are high profile people. What does your home life look like? Individuals are growing and changing everyday. For coupledom to work, these growing pains need to be experienced side by side. When you’re a famous musician, actor or athlete, you’re traveling for long periods of time. When your spouse is also a celebrity, he or she is traveling as well. This can mean going weeks and months at a time apart. It is harder to be a close support system or unit when you’re never around each other.

Although occasional “long distance”isn’t necessarily a deal breaker in itself, this issue of growing apart is compounded by greater levels of temptation and attention. This goes beyond fans for actors, too. They often have to kiss or otherwise be close with another person for their jobs. While it’s “work,” pursuing real chemistry off-set has set many relationships in motion.

But there is good news for all of you hopeless romantics out there: The seemingly recent surge in celebrity divorces is no way indicative of the larger picture. In fact, according the The New York Times, the old saying: “50% of marriages end in divorce” is untrue today, even though the myth lives on. Divorce rates have steadily decreased since the 1980s. This is largely attributed to the fact that adults are marrying at older ages, when they have a better sense of who they are and what they want from companionship. If these trends continue as they are, about two thirds of marriages will never end in divorce.
