Outrageous Athlete Purchases
Shaq LOVES Superman & spends tons of money getting custom man of steel swag.
Shaquille O’neal wrote in his autobiography that the whole Superman thing didn’t work for him – but let’s be clear, this was in reference to another player donning the caped crusader’s logo.
When Dwight Howard donned a Superman shirt and red cape at the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 2008, he hoped to unseat O’neal as the sports world’s resident Superman and become the player synonymous with Clark Kent’s alter-ego. But, never one to shrink from a media squabble (or movie offer), Shaq has made it clear he wants to be known as the NBA figure wearing the “S” on his chest and he’s willing to pay premium rates for the privilege.
O’Neil’s well-publicised $15,000 circular bed bearing the man of steel’s “S” logo is probably the most famous case in point of outrageous athlete purchases, but there have been others including the full Superman costume he has worn complete with cape, as well as the various “S” logo tees and jerseys the athlete cum rapper has sported over the years.
Wannabees take note – just to make his point O’neal handed out t-shirts bearing his name and the words “The real Superman” at the press conference.
